Track us live?? Sure, it's actually pretty easy
once you have the right tools!
We are trying something new on this trip. Disreguard
eveything you see below since we have made this
a little easier.
If this works we will revise this page after
this trip.
Google Earth
You can do this one of two ways. The best and
most consistent way is to download
Google Earth. The install is quick and easy
and can be trusted since it comes from the big daddy
of search engines Google. There are a few different
versions but the one you need is FREE. After you
download it and do the install all you have to do
is add us as a Network Link. That's it your done
Google Earth will update our position as it changes
LIVE and all you do is watch the screen.
If a picture is worth a 1000 words then a video
must be close to a million. I know for some people
this is no big deal, if your not one of those
people here is a quick video on Setting up Google
Earth to track us.
Google Maps
Ok. So you want the VERY
EASY and not so consistent way. This method uses
Google Maps instead of Google Earth. Due to the
way Google Maps works (and caching) you have to
refresh the page every time you want to see a position
change. Sometime you need to refresh a few times
to actually see the position change. We update every
4 seconds on our end but Google or your ISP may
cache the page. We have found that instead of just
hitting the refresh button that reloading
the whole page from the address bar produces better
results. You don't have to type the whole thing in
over and over again. Just click after the .KML in
the address bar and hit enter. This sounds much
more complicated than it is. Give it a try and you
will see exactly how easy it is.
Here is a quick video showing you exactly how
it works.
No that you have seen the video just
click Google
Maps and you will be able to see where we
are right now.
Look Steve, I Tried That and It Doesn't
Work
If you have tried everything above and it's not
working there could be a few reasons.
1) I have your location but you have not moved:
It could be that we have stopped for gas, let the
dogs out, grabbing something to eat, or have stopped
for the night. If this is the case then hold I can
assure you we will be on the move again shortly.
Check the camera if it looks like we are sitting
still then this is what's going on. IF the camera
is running and it looks like we are driving and
our position is still not updating PLEASE contact
us using the form on the contact page. That goes
straight to my phone and I check mail regularly.
Sometimes after a stop the GPS needs to be rebooted
on our end so please let us know if this happens.
2) I cannot connect with Google Earth or Google
Maps:
This usually happens after a stop when the GPS
hangs up or when we have it shut down. If we have
it shut down you will not see VIDEO or the GPS.
If you see video and it looks like we are moving
let us know by using the Contact form.
If you don't see VIDEO or GPS you can still contact
us but there is a good chance that we are not
currently traveling.
***NOTE***
Due to safety reasons at times you will see VIDEO
when we are stopped and the GPS will be turned
off. We do travel with 2 BIG dogs, I spent 6 years
in the Marines, and I also have other means for
protecting myself and my family. Unfortunately
times have changed since I was a kid and it pays
to be cautious. This is an experiment and meant
to be fun for our family, friends, and business
associates to track our travels. We have opened
this up to anyone who cares or likes to travel.
I am not naive and have taken precautions to protect
all of us and our property. Was all of it necessary?
I hope not but you can never be too careful.
